Registering a business in Ghana is done through the Office of the Registrar of Companies (ORC). This guide walks you through the whole process in 2026 — from choosing the right structure to collecting your certificate.
Step 1: Choose your business structure
Your structure decides your liability, taxes and credibility. The most common options are a Business Name (sole proprietor), a Company Limited by Shares, an Incorporated Partnership, or a Company Limited by Guarantee for NGOs. Not sure which? See our guide on business name vs company.
Step 2: Run a name search
Your proposed name must be unique and not misleading. Prepare up to four names in order of preference — the Registrar has the final say. You can start with our name search & reservation service.
Step 3: Gather what you need
You will need a Ghana Card (or passport) and a TIN for each owner and director, a digital address (GhanaPostGPS) for the office, and a short description of your business activities. A company also needs at least two directors (one resident in Ghana) and a company secretary.
Step 4: Complete and file the forms
A company uses Form 3; a business name uses Form A; a partnership uses Form B. You also file beneficial-ownership forms and TIN forms. This is where most rejections happen, so accuracy matters.
Step 5: Pay, collect and stay compliant
Pay the official ORC fees, then collect your certificate, TIN and stamped forms. After registration, remember to file annual returns each year to avoid penalties.
How long does it take?
Once a clean application is filed, ORC processing is typically 3–10 working days. Errors and missing documents are the biggest cause of delay.
