Business name renewal in Ghana: dates, fees and what happens if you forget

NELLA Support Team · 29 June 2026

Unlike companies (which file annual returns), registered business names in Ghana must be renewed periodically to remain valid. Renewal confirms your details and keeps your certificate — and therefore your bank account and contracts — in good standing.

What renewal involves

Renewal is a short filing with the ORC confirming the business particulars, plus the renewal fee. If details have changed — address, nature of business, ownership — an amendment is filed alongside.

What happens if you forget

A lapsed registration can be removed from the register. In practice that means banks may freeze or refuse the account, tenders and contracts that require a valid certificate are off the table, and another trader can potentially register a confusingly similar name. Restoring a removed name costs more than years of renewals.

Never miss it again

Every NELLA client gets a Compliance Calendar that tracks renewal dates with email reminders, and our annual plans handle the filing itself. Renewal takes minutes online — forgetting is the only expensive part.
